Laptop advice. My desktop finally died. Any recommendations? Dell, Toshiba, IBM, HP, etc?

Not dell...try.. Dell has problems with power cords, has led to several res. Averatec has the only smaller laptop for under $1G, its a good deal, works great for me. Also what are you going to be using it for? Different uses s for different computers......

Apple Powerbook G4 I own the 12" (so I can carry it in a smaller bag) and it is beautiful, streamlined, and runs excellently.

i second that, but i vote for 15". It's divine. And i only converted to Mac in february.

Compaq's fine for a year or two. I had a nice presario that worked great. Kinda heavy, but good. Of course, it died in february, and now i have a mac (see above post...)

Depends on your wants/needs I have a Dell because I dont take it many places and I need desktop performance. It's heavy (about 5.5lbs) but it does the trick. My partner drags hers back & forth to work everyday and to school. She was all about portability and only deals in words so didnt care about high end graphics. She got a Toshiba. A middleground idea is this Sony Viao I saw that is uber small. It is super portable but has no drives.. rather it has a docking station. So, you can take it with you but have less flexibility on the road and what you get in exchange is a super small machine with full functionality at home.
