I think it was supposed to be a primer. So he was trying to approach it with a level of delicacy. The bee in a jar scene, and admitting he was a serial murderer to his tied up partner would be fairly hard things to take for people new to BDSM.

Really? Now it's been a while since I read it, but my recollection is that he was quite funny. But yes, in a dry sort of humor way.
